Obituary

Oleta Lawson Cockrell , 93, of Joaquin, passed away Monday, September 23, 2013 at Holiday Nursing Home in Center. She was born August 8, 1920 in the Antioch Community of Shelby County to Hobson Lawson and Lela Jones Lawson. Oleta graduated from Center High School in 1937 and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science Degree and Master's Degree from Stephen F. Austin University. She was married for 52 years to Bud Truitt Cockrell, who preceded her in death. Oleta was a retired teacher, having taught in Aldine ISD and Joaquin ISD. She was a member of Joaquin First Baptist Church for over 60 years, where she served faithfully as a Sunday school teacher, church clerk and WMA leader. Oleta was known for her quilting and cooking skills, most especially her delicious cream corn.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center. Funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, September 26, 2013 at First Baptist Church in Joaquin. Interment will follow at Joaquin Cemetery in Joaquin.

Pallbearers will be Oleta's grandson, grandsons-in-law and great grandsons. Honorary pallbearers will be her granddaughters and great granddaughters.
