Marie Cannon Manning
of Center, Texas passed away on Monday, April 14, 2014 in Waco, Texas after a short illness. Born in Shelbyville, Texas on July 26, 1921 to Henry Edwin Cannon and wife, Allene Morrison Cannon, Marie's maternal grandparents, Willie and Susan Anthony Morrison helped her mother raise Marie and her younger brother, Hershel Cannon, after the death of her father.
Marie married C.A. Manning in 1939 and moved from Shelbyville to the James Community, moving into a home her husband constructed for his bride with lumber cut at his family's sawmill. They lived in their home until C.A.'s death in 1997, raising their daughter, Renee Manning Johnson of Marlin, Texas.
Marie loved to design clothing, sew, read and cook. She spent many happy years with C.A. maintaining an immaculate yard and gardens. She was a Bible School and Sunday School teacher at First United Methodist Church in Center, where her future son-in-law was one of her 4-year old students. Marie was a Girl Scout leader, a charter board member of the Fannie Booth Brown Library, a member of Beta Sigma Phi sorority, and an active member of the Center Roughrider Band Boosters.
In her later years, Marie moved to Waco, Texas to be near to her daughter, Renee. She was an active member of the Stilwell Retirement Residence community.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and both of her brothers. She is survived by her daughter, Renee Manning Johnson and husband, Steve; by two grandsons, William Manning Johnson and wife, Erika, of San Antonio, Texas, and Spencer James Johnson of Washington, D.C.; by her nephew, Barry Cannon and wife, Diana, of Kerrville, Texas; and niece, Sue Cannon, of Pensacola, Florida. She was also survived by her husband's nieces and nephews: Walter Manning and wife, Ellen; Johnnie Sue Schaper; Joyce Anson and husband, George; Mary Jane Grant; and John Walker and wife, Diane.
Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 P.M on Thursday, April 17 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center. Services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 18, 2014, also at Watson and Sons, with interment at Oaklawn Memorial Park.
