Obituary

Laverne Goings Adams was born on February 1, 1926, to Frank and Callie Goings. She passed away on May 1, 2025, at 99 years old. She married O.F. (Butch) Adams on December 9, 1945, and they were married almost 73 years before Butch's passing in 2018.

Laverne and Butch welcomed 3 children, O.F. Adams, Jr. (Junebug), Melba, and Marsha. She and Butch owned and operated O.F. Adams Grocery from 1953 to 1973.

Laverne, most affectionately known as Granny, or Granny Vern, started selling Avon from 1973 until 2018. She loved to dress up and peddle Avon around town and loved to go to her weekly beauty shop appointments. She had a vast collection of Avon trophy dolls as some of her most prized possessions. She also loved to dress and accessorize, often adorning her clothing with many necklaces, brooches, earrings, and rings. She could even tell you from which Avon campaign book they come from, sometimes, she'd even have extras to sell stored in her van.

Starting in January, she would hand out Avon books to the grandkids and have them circle and initial what they wanted for Christmas. It was an exciting day to go to Granny's house on the day that she got new Avon books to peruse, circle, and initial. Granny loved to grow a garden and preserve her harvests, often obsessing over her tomato plants, checking them several times a day. She loved to sew and make alterations to garments for her family. Granny also fancied herself as an artist, painting many Paint-By-Numbers canvases, and gifting them to her family until her eyesight failed her.

Granny was also devout in her faith, spending many hours listening to Jimmy Swaggart, who she referred to as "The Swag" in her living room. She was amazed by the televised service that he put on.

Throughout her 99 years, she has worn many hats: daughter, sister, wife, mother, business owner, grandmother, great-grandmother, and great-great grandmother. Granny was fiercely independent, and lived at home until a fall forced her into rehab at Pine Grove, where she made many friends and was well loved and cared for by the staff.
