John Spencer Mathews, 80, of Shelbyville, passed away Monday, October 5, 2026, in Shelbyville.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, October 10, 2026, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home with visitation to begin at 10:00 a.m. Bro. Rusty Hall and Bro. Jody Hooper will officiate. Interment will follow at Strong Cemetery in Huxley.

Born December 1, 1945, in Joaquin, John is the son of Andrew Reverne Mathews and Maedell Taylor Mathews. He graduated from Joaquin High School in 1963 and later attended Stephen F. Austin University. John was a member of Smyrna Church in Huxley.

He is survived by his wife, Lorelei Mathews; daughter, Misty Nowicki; granddaughter, Kaley Sloan and husband Trey; brother, Don Mathews; sisters-in-law, Phyllis Davis and Bernadine Walley; son, Abel Caporali and his wife Maria along with their children, Jose, Chris, Jacque, and Lynlee; niece, Nancy Smith and husband Frank; and nephews, Rodney Mathews and wife Denise and Spencer Mathews and wife Teresa.

Preceded in death by parents, Andrew Reverne Mathews and Maedell Taylor Mathews; brother, Elmer Mathews; and nephew, Bill Mathews.

Pallbearers will be Keith O’Rear, Larry O’Rear, Sammy Furlow, Skipper Hendricks, Gilbert Vaughn, and Joe Hooper.
